Padstow is one of Cornwall's highlights. This traditional Cornish fishing village, set on the west side of the Camel estuary opposite the village of Rock, not only boasts many interesting shops set around its harbour, and the famous restaurant and fish bar of TV chef Rick Stein, but it also has one of North Cornwall's finest sandy beaches.
Padstow’s importance as a fishing port has declined over the years with tourism very much replacing it as the town’s major source of income. The harbour is now more dominated by private yachts than fishing boats, although local fishermen continue to work here and their daily catch is available for sale.
As well as fishing, boating and the beautifully sandy beach, Padstow is also a great place for cycling, being situated at the end of the Camel Trail cycle-path which runs inland through Wadebridge, eventually reaching Bodmin. This 17 mile long route follows the path of the former railway line which in former days used to find its western-most point at Padstow. The famous Atlantic Coast Express used to head here full of holiday-makers on their way from Waterloo Station in London. Sadly, with the rise of the motor-car the line from Bodmin to Padstow was closed in the 1960s and those days are no more. But that hasn’t stopped Padstow’s rise as a popular tourist destination and it continues to flourish in popularity today.
Any stay in Padstow is sure to be enjoyable and with a great range of holiday lets and cottages available on Go2 finding the perfect base for your Cornish holiday is only a few clicks away. Recommended!
