A delightful Devon village at the mouth of the River Lyn on the northern edge of the Exmoor National Park. It is situated at the foot of a 210 metre gorge, with its twin town, Lynton, overlooking it from above. The towns are connected by the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway. This funicular cliff lift was originally opened in 1890, and presents spectacular views along the coastline.
The bay here is to be recommended for both surfing and rock pooling, and there are many other beautiful beaches within close reach, including those at Croyde, Woolacombe and Combe Martin. The South West Coast Path runs through Lynmouth, and the village is also the starting point of the Two Moors Way, which ends at Ivybridge in South Devon.
In 1952 Lynmouth fell victim to devastating flooding, the history of which can be discovered at the Lynmouth Flood Memorial Hall.
The magnificent scenery of the region can be admired at the Valley of the Rocks, a dry valley that runs along the coast near Lynton, as well as at Watersmeet, a dramatic river gorge where multiple waterfalls tumble through the woodland.
Other attractions in the area include the Lyn Model Railway, the Lynton Cinema, the Lyn and Exmoor Museum and the Middleham Gardens.
