About Sidmouth, Devon
Sidmouth is an attractive coastal town in East Devon, on the estuary of the River Syd. Part of the Jurassic coastline it has cliffs at each end of its promenade, notable for their distinctive colour. Sidmouth has a population of about 15,000 but is popular with tourists who are looking for a quite, but varied holiday location.
Sidmouth has a good range of shops and restaurants, is easily accessible by road and bus, had good leisure and sporting facilities and a beach, which whilst mainly pebbled, is also sandy at lower tide.
'Sidmouth is a very pleasant seaside resort on the south coast of Devon. What strikes me the most is that it is a very well-maintained, clean and tidy town. An example of this is seen at the very well kept Connaught Gardens, not far from the town centre. The town itself is of average size, with a good range of shops (including many independent, specialist shops, such as gift shops), accommodation and restaurants. There is an esplanade at the sea front, and then a pebble beach. On both the east and west sides of the beach, there are towering red-stone cliffs which give for very impressive views. It is true to say that Sidmouth appeals more to the elderly generation, and is not a brash, loud resort at all. Therefore, if you are younger and looking for a more lively resort, this is clearly not for you. But the fact that Sidmouth is not a “Newquay” is exactly why I like the town ! Overall then, the visitor will not be disappointed. A final note is that Sidmouth also acts as a good base if you stayed for a week or so – as it is not far from other nearby attractive villages like Beer, attractions such as Bicton Gardens, and also not far from towns such as Honiton and Exmouth – and even Exeter is not that far away.
