About York, Yorkshire
Established by the Romans in 71AD as Eboracum, the walled city of York, situated between the River Ouse and the River Foss in North Yorkshire, is steeped in history.
Once a major trading centre for wool, York became a dominant location for railways and manufacturing during the 19th century, a fact reflected today by the presence of the National Railway Museum in its midst. Today the city’s economy is funded more by services and tourism but the many tourist attractions in the city have their roots in both its manufacturing and ecclesiastical history. The famous York Minister illustrates York’s importance as the northern ecclesiastical province of the Church of England.
Transport facilities are excellent with good rail and road access, and a wide variety of accommodation, including both hotels and self catering, are provided both in and around the city.
York is a great city to visit in its own right, but it also provides an excellent base for exploring both the Yorkshire Dales and the Yorkshire coastline, including nearby towns such as Scarborough.
'York is, quite simply, a true "5 Star City." There is something for everyone, and it is one of the rare cities in the UK where you could actually stay for a few days' holiday if not a week. Even amongst cathedral cities, it ranks as one of the best. York has it all... a rich history with many cultural buildings and a castle, one of the best cathedrals (strictly, "minster") in the UK, a river where you can take boat trips, and an ancient city wall which for many stretches you can still walk along. On top of that, there is the National Railway Museum, the Jorvik Centre, the race course, and the famous, cobbled "shambles" district in the centre. Then, further, the city centre itself has both High-Street shops and independent retailers blended in together, and of course countless pubs and restaurants where to eat. The icing on the cake is that it the city is so well located as an ideal base, especially to visit the Yorkshire Dales. There is so much that could be said... so the only conclusion is to say "visit and see for yourself !" York would make the "Top 10" cities in the UK, and would come second in my top 2 UK cathedral cities (I also hope to review my favourite cathedral city !) So, visit, and enjoy York !
