Barnstaple is the main town in North Devon, situated on the River Taw. This town with ancient historic roots, as well as strong Victorian roots to much of its architecture, boasts a fine range of shops and good transport connections with both rail access from Exeter as well as a newly opened Western Bypass which now diverts much of the traffic which once used to work its way through the town centre. Notable points of interest include the Castle, the Pannier Market and the Clock Tower dating back to 1862. An annual attraction is the Barnstaple Fair held every September and of much interest to railway enthusiasts will be the nearby narrow gauge Lynton and Barnstaple Railway which has been re-opened in recent years as a tourist attraction running authentic narrow gauge steam trains. Go2 offers a great range of holiday lets and cottages in Barnstaple and the surrounding area, and this town proves to be a great central location for exploring the North Devon coast and countryside. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.
North Devon
From the vast unspoilt expanses of Exmoor to its endless sandy beaches and charming
seaside towns and villages, North Devon makes for the perfect cottage holiday getaway.
Discover the beauties of this tranquil landscape for yourself with one of Go2's holiday lets or
cottages in North Devon. Wild and rugged, Exmoor is great for walking, riding and
cycling. This is Lorna Doone country, where farmers have battled the elements for
centuries. The coastline here is truly spectacular and is a real highlight. Walk the Coastal Path, and you’ll be treated to stunning views of high cliffs dropping straight to the sea, or to small coves far below. Beach lovers will also enjoy a holiday in North Devon. Resorts like
Woolacombe and Saunton offer long stretches of sandy beach that are ideal for surfing
and sailboarding. Clovelly is a real beauty spot, and very picturesque, while Appledore
is a picture-perfect fishing village. Ilfracombe is a more traditional seaside resort, but is not overly-commercialised, while the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth have an atmosphere all their own. Don’t miss the wonderful water-powered funicular railway here.
South Devon
Justly famous as one of England’s finest destinations, South Devon has everything
you need for the perfect cottage holiday. Go2 has an extensive collection of holiday lets and cottages in South Devon, all ideally located for the many attractions on offer here. The fabulous
coastline, stretching from Sidmouth to Plymouth is the main draw here. There are
glorious beaches, mysterious estuaries, rugged cliffs and sandy coves to explore,
as well as the famous English Riviera. Taking in the resorts of Torquay, Paignton
and Brixham, it offers all the facilities you need for a great seaside cottage holiday.
Or if you prefer somewhere quieter on one of our South Devon holidays, there
are the Georgian charms of Sidmouth, or Salcombe, long a favourite with sailors. Inland,
you can get away from it all in the rugged splendours of Dartmoor National Park
or just enjoy the rolling hills and rural delights of the South Devon countryside.
Make time for a visit to Exeter, the bustling capital of the region, with its cathedral,
cobbled streets and wide selection of shops. Or step back in time to the Elizabethan
age in Totnes with its charming tudor houses.
