The capital city of both England and the UK, London is also one of the world’s leading cities, having a prominent role in many areas, including finance, commerce, arts, culture, and media amongst others.
Set on the River Thames, in the midst of Greater London, the city’s history goes back two thousand years to its origins as Londinium, a Roman settlement. The river has played a dominant role in London’s growth over the years, with the city serving as a major port for centuries.
Set to play host to the Olympic Games for the third time in its history, London’s role as a centre for tourism is evident in that it has the largest number of international visitors of any city - a fact reflected in the diversity of its population.
The range of tourist attractions in the city is almost endless, with many of them hardly needing an introduction. But any visit to London would not be complete without visiting at least some of the following: Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament (and Big Ben), the London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Piccadily, Oxford Circus, St Paul’s Cathedral, Hyde Park, Wembley Stadium, the National Gallery, the British Museum, the Victoria and Albery Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Science Museum, Madame Tussauds... and the list goes on!
Transport facilities are of course excellent, with the famed London Underground providing access to much of the city, as well as multiple railway stations, bus routes, taxis and road access. Of course the visitors greatest problem is likely to be avoiding congestion or crowds, but if you plan your visit well you shouldn’t have too many problems. Accommodation is plenteous, with hotels of all standards, and many self catering properties.
