                                                Description

High Bield is a detached house sleeping 8, which sits high above the beautiful village of Hartsop at the foot of the Kirkstone Pass. Built in the 1920s by the 'Glasgow Girl' Ann Macbeth, the house and garden have superb views of Brotherswater and Ullswater. The warm and cosy house was recently refurbished to a very high standard. The house has wifi.
The house is entered via the newly built sun porch - perfect for drying all your outdoor gear. A glazed door leads to the dining area, which take in the spectacular view over Brotherswater, and the newly fitted kitchen. There is a walk-in utility room with laundry facilities. The attractive sitting room with log burner has fine views. There are two good double bedrooms on the ground floor, one with a king-sized bed and one with a double bed, and a new bathroom with large shower, basin and wc. Upstairs you will find three further bedrooms - two generous singles, and an interestingly shaped twin which was formerly the artist studio. Upstairs is also a second bathroom with bath, basin and wc. Good views from all the main windows. The house is comfortable, newly decorated and equipped throughout with solid wood floors and rugs. Period features, like original fireplaces, have been retained throughout.
Outside there is a lovely rocky hillside garden with wild flowers and mature trees which children will love as a hide-out. It is steep in places and very young children will need to be supervised. There is parking for two or three cars in the drive or garage. The approach to the house is up a track which can be an adventure in winter. Please take care if bringing a vehicle with little clearance. To see pictures of the track click on the link to our website on this page.
The house is an excellent base from which to walk, around Angle Tarn, on to the High Street ridge, or over to Fairfield and St Sunday Crag. Also don't miss a cruise on beautiful Ullswater where you can take a steamer ride to Howtown with a walk back along the east side of the lake, or spend a full day sailing up to Pooley Bridge for lunch in one of the many local pubs or cafés. Glenridding and Patterdale make good bases with shops for daily supplies, outdoor equipment and several pubs and eating places. The nearest shops can be found in Patterdale - it has an excellent post office that sells firewood, newspapers and home made bread amongst other things.

Built from distinctive red stone, this market town in the Eden Valley of Cumbria was once the county’s capital, and it presents a fascinating history. The two oldest streets, Burrowgate and Sandgate, date from the 1200s, and the ruins of Penrith Castle, begun at the end of the 14th century to defend this area against the Scots, can be found in a park next to the railway station. On the south-east of the town are the ruins of Brougham Castle, built by the Normans on the bank of the River Eamont. Both castles are now owned by English Heritage and draw many visitors.

On top of Beacon Hill, and overlooking the town, is Penrith Beacon, a monument built in 1719. The view from the Beacon is magnificent, and on a clear day one can see right across the Eden Valley to the hills of Lakeland.

The main church is St. Andrew’s, built from 1720 to 1722 in a commanding Grecian style. A legendary giant and King of All Cumbria is rumoured to be buried in a grave in the churchyard. The four stones around the grave are said to represent the wild boar he killed in the nearby forest.

The Penrith Museum showcases the history, geology and archaeology of the Penrith area. Together with the Tourist Information Centre, it is housed in the former Robinson’s School, an Elizabethan building which was altered in 1670 and used as a school until the early 1970s.

Less than three miles outside the boundaries of the Lake District National Park, Penrith offers many fantastic opportunities for walkers and outdoor enthusiasts. It is an ideal base for exploring the breathtaking northern Lakes, the luscious Eden Valley and the rolling Pennine hills. Located at an intersection of routes between Scotland and England, it can be easily accessed from the M6 and A66, as well as a mainline railway service.
