A pretty town on the Dorset coast, Christchurch has become a popular destination for visitors, thanks to its harbour, beaches, nature reserves and historic buildings. Located close to both Bournemouth and the New Forest, it offers opportunities for entertainment, nightlife and shopping as well as outdoor adventure and activity. Part of the World Heritage Jurassic Coast, it is based at the confluence of the Rivers Stour and Avon, and has its own natural harbour, which has been used as a trading point and safe mooring for traders since the Iron Age. Boat trips can be taken from here, and Mudeford, Stanpit, Avon Beach, Friars Cliff and Steamer Point all form areas along the estuary, harbour, The Run and the beaches around Christchurch Bay.
Christchurch Quay lies in the upper reaches of the harbour. It includes a splash park, novelty golf, boat hire, and Place Mill - a Grade II listed building and important heritage site. During the summer the Victorian bandstand holds concerts of brass, orchestral and light music.
Other attractions within the area include: Highcliffe Castle, a magnificent 1830s mansion with cliff-top views of the Dorset coastline; Priory Church, a mediaeval monastic church offering regular guided tours; Adventure Wonderland, a family theme park; Christchurch Castle ruins; and the Red House Museum and Gardens.
Christchurch boasts an excellent number of places to eat and drink, and has earned a reputation both locally and nationally for the annual Food and Wine Festival and the International Food Market.
Bournemouth is served by an international airport and is only a short drive away.
