Description
One of two idyllic holiday cottages situated in a peaceful, rural location on the Severn estuary next to the Forest of Dean. These well equipped, ground floor cottages look out onto a traditional apple orchard, which is maintained under a Country Stewardship agreement, and have views of the river and, on a good day, to the Malvern Hills. They are close to a network of footpaths including the Severn Way footpath and one to the local pub. In converting the cottages, the owners have tried to be as environmentally friendly as practically possible and have, amongst other things, have installed a heating system which utilises geothermal energy.
Both cottages are graded 4 stars by Visit Britain and Hamstalls is graded Mobility Level 1 on the National Accessibility Scheme.
Hoolet is ground floor property with under floor heating throughout and comprises one double, or twin, bedroom with ensuite bathroom containing a toilet, a bath (with shower over) and wash hand basin, and a living/dining room with a log burning stove, flat screen TV, various board games and a well equipped kitchen. A sofa-bed is available to allow families of up to 4 to stay. There is a small garden with patio, lawn, garden furniture and BBQ. Two cars can comfortably be parked in front of the cottage. Access is available to the Severn Way footpath either via the nearby public footpaths or directly through the owner’s (and their Labradors’) garden, to the edge of the river.
Dogs are welcome, by prior agreement, though we do charge and extra £20 per pet. The two orchards in front of the cottages can be used for dog walking purposes provided, of course, the sheep are not in them!
The Forest of Dean, with its ancient mines and 300 year old oak trees, and the Wye Valley, with its meandering river, vertical rock faces and oenological view point at Symonds Yat, together offer some of the country’s best out-door activities including, cycling, walking, boarding, canoeing, caving and a “Go Ape” tree-top adventure site.
Also, within a short car journey one can find many children’s attractions, museums, castles and mines, while an hour’s journey will take you to Cardiff, the Black Mountains, Bristol or Gloucester and Cheltenham.
Alternatively, you can just relax at the Priory Cottages enjoying the views, the Cotswold sheep grazing in the orchards, the wide variety of birds and, periodically, watch the famous Severn Bore.

The city of Gloucester, for example, is where William the Conqueror ordered the creation of the Domesday Book and the magnificent cathedral here has many connections with the Norman kings of England. With our Gloucestershire cottage holidays, you’re just a short drive away. Make sure Berkeley Castle is also on your itinerary. This 12th century castle has been owned by the Berkeley family since its foundation and is now a fine stately home, packed with art treasures, tapestries, silver, porcelain and furniture.
Then there’s elegant, genteel Cheltenham, with its grand terraces, much frequented by the lords and ladies of Georgian times and now home to some very smart shops. Or step back in time to Tewkesbury, where timbered buildings sit crowded on the banks of the rivers Avon and Severn. And don’t miss bohemian Stroud, where you’ll find a great selection of cafés and pubs.
