The Piggery

Description

The Piggery is situated in the grounds of a Grade 2 listed, sixteenth century farm, close to the borders of Wales. This stunning barn conversion is set in five acres of picturesque paddocks, overlooking the Welsh hills and Shropshire Union Canal. The Piggery is a '5 Star' luxury, self catering cottage for couples, who enjoy the countryside with opportunities to walk, fish, cycle and play golf from the doorstep! Those who enjoy touring National Trust properties and gardens will be spoilt for choice! The high-ceilinged, beamed living room is very spacious, light and homely with a large wood burning stove and ample seating. The floors are covered with thick oak floor boards and these extend through into the bedroom giving the whole property a warm and welcoming feel. The Piggery is centrally heated and well insulated throughout. A flat screen TV/DVD player is provided just in case you would prefer an evening in and meals can be enjoyed around a huge dining table for ten! The Piggery has its own garden with seasonal produce to pick. Two bicycles are available to hire for those who wish to do so. The bedroom is light and airy, furnished with a super-king double bed, which can be made into two single beds if required. The bedroon leads into a luxury bathroom with a beautiful roll-top bath . Just the thing for a pampering long soak. Bed linen is provided but not towels. The modern kitchen is fully equipped with digital radio, electric hob, fan assisted oven, microwave, fridge, dishwasher and washing machine. A 'welcome pack' can be requested before your stay, which would include local produce and items for a first breakfast. The cottage is on one level, with two steps leading to the bathroom and kitchen. The property has its own parking space and we do welcome well behaved dogs at a cost of £25 per week. Horses, dogs, cats, chickens and geese also live on the farm , and so far, haven't eaten anyone! The Piggery is close to: Whittington Castle, Chirk Castle, Erdigg Hall and Powys Castle (National Trust Properties). Llangollen and Pontcysyllte aqueducts built by Thomas Telford. If you fancy hiring a canal boat for the day, we are minutes away from the Maestermyn Marina, which would enable you to experience the aqueducts first hand! Ellesmere and Oswestry, both historic border towns, with weekly markets and shops. For the energetic and adventurous; Snowdonia National Park is one hour away by car. Just a short 30 minute drive will take you into Shrewsbury, a medieval County Town with boutiques, fine restaurants and theatres. The Roman city of Chester is a 45 minute drive away for serious shoppers, race-goers and lovers of fine food. Great local pubs and eating houses abound in the area. All in all, The Piggrey is a fantastic place to visit either for a short break or a longer relaxing holiday away from it all.

Peaceful, uncrowded and still largely devoted to farming, this is one of England’s most unspoilt counties, as you’ll discover during a break in one of our holiday cottages in Shropshire. Take a walk on the Long Mynd a dramatic ridge which stands high over the landscape, then pop in to the small village of Church Stretton which nestles in the valley below for a hearty tea.

The county town of Shrewsbury sits on a hill almost completely surrounded by a loop in the river Severn. Here you’ll find Elizabethan timber-framed buildings and handsome Georgian terraces. Shropshire even has its own centre of gastronomy in the charming town of Ludlow, which boasts a number of Michelin starred restaurants as well as a profusion of specialist food shops. The splendid Norman castle at Ludlow is also well worth a visit, as is nearby Stokesay Castle, both within a short drive of our holiday cottages in Shropshire.

Seeing Shropshire today it’s hard to believe it was actually the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. You can see where it all started at Ironbridge Gorge. Don’t miss Blists Hill, which recreates life at the turn of the twentieth century.
