County Clare is a county of the mid west coast of Ireland, part of the province of Munster, located north west of the River Shannon and bordered by County Galway (to the north), North Tipperary, and County Limerick (to the south). It has the nickname of ‘The Banner County’. With the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Galway Bay to the north, the River Shannon to the south east and Lough Derg (the third largest lake in Ireland) to the north east, County Clare is firmly surrounded by water, and on its Atlantic coastline it is famed for the dramatic Cliffs of Moher – a ‘must’ visit in the region. Clare is known for the beauty and variety of its scenery and has many interesting places to visit including The Burren (known for its rare flowers and fauna), Mutton Island, Inishmore (or Deer) Island, Kilkee, Kilbaha and Spanish Point. With a long history, various sporting events and many traditional music festivals, Clare will keep the visitor occupied for many a day.
