County Limerick is a beautiful county situated in the mid west of Ireland and named after the city of Limerick, through which the River Shannon flows, entering the Atlantic Ocean at the north of the county. Limerick in Irish is 'Luimneach', one meaning of which is 'flat area' which is an accurate description of much of the county which consists of a limestone plain surrounded by mountains - the Ballyhoura Mountains, the Galtess and the Slieve Felims. Galtmore in the south east of the county is the highest point, on the border of County Tipperary. There are good road and rail connections throughout County Limerick and numerous places to visit including several very interesting castles.
