About Olney, Buckinghamshire

Holiday lets in Olney, Buckinghamshire - Travel Guide to Olney

Known for the Olney Hymns by John Newton and William Cowper, and the Olney Pancake Race, the market own of Olney in Buckinghamshire sits close to the borders of both Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire and is situated on the Great Ouse River.

Olney is a popular town with tourists and is very accessible, being close to junction 14 of the M1, with train access being available via either Bedford or Milton Keynes stations.

'Olney is well worth visiting, and most of its key points of interest can be seen in half a day. Every visitor will be struck by the main road going through the village, as very historic and impressive houses and buildings line both sides and so it is very picturesque. Indeed, although being in Buckinghamshire (and only a few miles from Milton Keynes) it actually has the feel of a Cotswold village. There is a market square too, again with historic buildings on all sides. One such buidling is the famous "Newton and Cowper Museum" - which is a "must visit" attraction. This museum is dedicated to Olney's two most famous residents - the Rev John Newton and the poet William Cowper. These men were both Christians, and John Newton is well known for being a cruel slave trader who was converted to Christ, and amongst his hymns are "Amazing Grace". The village has many good places to eat and specialised shops. Once a year, there is the famous Olney Pancake Race. Also not to be missed is the river and old mill, and indeed there are numerous walks by the river and meadows.
