About St Ives, Cornwall
The seaside resort of St Ives, in Cornwall, sits just west of Camborne and to the north of of Penzance. Traditionally a fishing village the town thrives today as a popular holiday resort, known for its superb sandy beaches, as well as being the outlet for the works of a number of local artists.
In addition to road and coach servives (including regular National Express coaches to and from London) St Ives also has its own railway station, linking it to Penzance, and ultimately London.
With a range of holiday accommodation including hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs and self-catering, both in St Ives and also the neighbouring Carbis Bay, this popular resort is not only a great location in its own right but also provides an excellent base for a Cornish holiday within easy reach of many other local beaches and tourist attractions such as Flambards and the Eden Project.
'St Ives is a harbour town on the north Cornwall coast and is a place to be visited, as there is something for everyone. Narrow, sometimes steep, streets with specialist and independent shops and restaurants, lead down to the harbour. As there is so much going on, it makes for an ideal base to have a holiday in the far region of Cornwall. The harbour area is attractive, with many water-front pubs and restaurants. This summer (2011) I even saw 2 seals come right into the harbour looking for food ! So are there any downsides to St Ives ? Yes, two. Firstly, it is a victim of its own success in that in high-season it gets extremely busy with tourists. Not just in the daytime, but also the evening, where there is a very lively atmosphere but the crowds can mean finding somewhere to eat can be difficult. Second, the car parking access is very poor (and very expensive) - the main car park is a 15 minute walk up a very steep hill (returning to the car.) This is not the fault of St Ives of course - it was built years before tha motor car was ever dreamt of ! On the positive front however, there is a park and ride train service to St Ives. Do not let these negative aspects put you off though - certainly visit, but if you do NOT like crowds, then the most you may want here is a day....on the other hand, if you want to stay somewhere with a lively atmosphere, this is the place for you.
