Travel Guide to holidays in... Beer, Devon, England

The quaint fishing village of Beer, on the East Devon coast between Sidmouth and Seaton, is a place like no other. Unspoilt by modern commercialisation it retains its traditional character. Local fishermen continue to sell freshly caught fish near the sea front, and the village provides a number of interesting gift shops, galleries, tea shops and eating places. A superb location to stay at for exploring the beautiful East Devon 'Jurassic' coast. Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.

North Devon

From the vast unspoilt expanses of Exmoor to its endless sandy beaches and charming seaside towns and villages, North Devon makes for the perfect cottage holiday getaway. Discover the beauties of this tranquil landscape for yourself with one of Go2's holiday lets or cottages in North Devon. Wild and rugged, Exmoor is great for walking, riding and cycling. This is Lorna Doone country, where farmers have battled the elements for centuries. The coastline here is truly spectacular and is a real highlight. Walk the Coastal Path, and you’ll be treated to stunning views of high cliffs dropping straight to the sea, or to small coves far below. Beach lovers will also enjoy a holiday in North Devon. Resorts like Woolacombe and Saunton offer long stretches of sandy beach that are ideal for surfing and sailboarding. Clovelly is a real beauty spot, and very picturesque, while Appledore is a picture-perfect fishing village. Ilfracombe is a more traditional seaside resort, but is not overly-commercialised, while the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth have an atmosphere all their own. Don’t miss the wonderful water-powered funicular railway here.

South Devon

Justly famous as one of England’s finest destinations, South Devon has everything you need for the perfect cottage holiday. Go2 has an extensive collection of holiday lets and cottages in South Devon, all ideally located for the many attractions on offer here. The fabulous coastline, stretching from Sidmouth to Plymouth is the main draw here. There are glorious beaches, mysterious estuaries, rugged cliffs and sandy coves to explore, as well as the famous English Riviera. Taking in the resorts of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, it offers all the facilities you need for a great seaside cottage holiday. Or if you prefer somewhere quieter on one of our South Devon holidays, there are the Georgian charms of Sidmouth, or Salcombe, long a favourite with sailors. Inland, you can get away from it all in the rugged splendours of Dartmoor National Park or just enjoy the rolling hills and rural delights of the South Devon countryside. Make time for a visit to Exeter, the bustling capital of the region, with its cathedral, cobbled streets and wide selection of shops. Or step back in time to the Elizabethan age in Totnes with its charming tudor houses.

Not only does it give you the freedom of taking your own car but it provides a superb experience of travelling by sea and exploring the coastline. With convenient routes between Holyhead and Dublin, or Pembroke and Rosslare, we recommend Irish Ferries for great, low-cost, transport. They are the leading Irish ferry company and provide both an excellent service, and excellent prices.

User Guides

We love visiting Beer. It's different - a small, secluded bay, engulfed by large cliffs, from which local fishermen in small boats head out to bring in their catch. It's a peaceful, quiet sort of beach to visit, especially on summer evenings as the sun is going down. The village itself is quaint with a number of good shops especially those selling the works of local artists. But one place we've returned to more than once is the Pecorama Gardens and Railway - the boys just love visiting the model railway exhibition here!
