Travel Guide to holidays in... Lowestoft, Suffolk, England

Lowestoft is a seaside town in Suffolk, England. The most easterly town in England, it is located on the north sea coast within a few miles of South Elmham and Oulton and is one of around a hundred towns and villages in Suffolk in which Go2 has cottages or holidays lets available. The nearest official cities are Norwich (population 174,047), Ely (population 13,954), and Canterbury (which has a population of 43,552 according to the 2001 Census).

The coastline around Lowestoft has been called the "Sunrise Coast". Lowestoft has two main beaches to the south of its harbour, with lifeguard cover during the summer. As well as being geat family beaches they are popular with those who like watersports. There are two piers, the South pier and the Claremont pier.

There is a theme park called Pleasurewood Hills to the north of the town and the norfolk broads system is nearby with Oulton Broad being a great location to catch a boat to explore this area. This beautiful county is situated to the south of Norfolk, with Cambridgeshire to the west, Essex to the south, and the North Sea to the east. It has much to offer the visitor, including the wetlands of the Broads, the Wool Towns, and a coastal strip to the east known as “The Sandlings”. There are over 5000km of marked paths as well as national cycle routes, along with country parks, nature reserves such as the Trimley Marshes, and picnic sites.

Suffolk’s notable towns include Ipswich (the county town), Felixstowe, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket.

West Suffolk is famed for its archaeological discoveries, especially that at Sutton Hoo in 1939. A grassy mound was found to be a ship burial ground containing a collection of Anglo-Saxon treasures, including a Sword of State, a shield, a helmet, gold and silver bowls, jewellery and a lyre. The site is now owned by the National Trust.
