Travel Guide to holidays in... Newmarket, Suffolk, England

Newmarket is a market town in Suffolk, England, famous for both its racecourses and its reputation as the global centre and birthplace of thoroughbred horse racing. Newmarket has also long been a centre for the Monarchy, with Charles II and others having a home here. Newmarket is not far from Isleham, Mildenhall, Denston, Ely, Cambridge, and Coveney and is one of around a hundred towns and villages in Suffolk in which Go2 has cottages or holidays lets available. The nearest designated cities are Ely (population 13,954), Cambridge (population 113,442), and Peterborough (which has a population of 136,292 according to the 2001 Census).

Newmarket has two racecourses, over fifty training stables, more than sixty horse-breeding studs, and is the home of over 3000 racehorses. It is not surprising then that nearly one in three local jobs is related to the horse racing industry! If you having a liking for anything equine, Newmarket should be at the top of your list of places to visit! Follow the links to find holiday cottages and lets available in this area on Go2, or view the surrounding area on the map below.

This beautiful county is situated to the south of Norfolk, with Cambridgeshire to the west, Essex to the south, and the North Sea to the east. It has much to offer the visitor, including the wetlands of the Broads, the Wool Towns, and a coastal strip to the east known as “The Sandlings”. There are over 5000km of marked paths as well as national cycle routes, along with country parks, nature reserves such as the Trimley Marshes, and picnic sites.

Suffolk’s notable towns include Ipswich (the county town), Felixstowe, Lowestoft, Bury St Edmunds and Newmarket.

West Suffolk is famed for its archaeological discoveries, especially that at Sutton Hoo in 1939. A grassy mound was found to be a ship burial ground containing a collection of Anglo-Saxon treasures, including a Sword of State, a shield, a helmet, gold and silver bowls, jewellery and a lyre. The site is now owned by the National Trust.
